Arran at War HMS HMT Arran
This ceramic mug depicts  HMS (HMT) Arran which served in WWII. The sketched images in charcoal by Alistair are reproduced in fine detail and the mugs have launch and loss dates on the back. Each mug is supplied with an information card giving some of the history of the ship, sad demise and loss of life.

Built by Cook, Welton & Gemmill (Beverley, U.K.) and launched in 1940, the HMS Arran was a MS Trawler of the Isle Class; trawlers were the most common vessel in the Royal Navy at the outbreak of WWII and were excellent as escort vessels. She was primarily used for minesweeping and harbour defence mainly in Freetown, South Africa. HMS Arran picked up survivors totalling 266 from ships Clan Macpherson and Dumana which were torpedoed in two separate events in 1943 off Freetown and Sassandra, Ivory Coast respectively. At the war’s end she was converted to a civilian vessel and sold in 1946. After several further sales and renames she was lost as the German coastal freighter Berta Kienass after striking a stray WWII mine just off Texel in the North Sea with the loss of 13 men and women.

A portion from the sale of this mug is donated to HMS Dasher (1943) Association.
