Arran at War HMS Dasher HMS HMT Arran
These ceramic mugs depict HMS Dasher and HMS (HMT) Arran which both served in WWII. The sketched images in charcoal by Alistair are reproduced in fine detail and have launch and loss dates on the back. Each mug is supplied with an information card giving some of the history of the ship, sad demise and loss of life.
HMS Dasher was of the Avenger class of converted merchant ships and used as an escort carrier in WWII. She took part in Operation Torch transporting Sea Hurricanes to aid in the invasion of French North Africa. An explosion on board on the 27th March 1943 caused her, in less than three minutes, to sink in the Firth of Clyde in sight of the Isle of Arran with the loss of 379 men. Boats from Lamlash and Brodick, alongside others from the mainland, assisted in the rescue of the 149 survivors but fuel on the water caught fire and contributed to the heavy death toll. Rescuers were told not to discuss the incident and local press was forbidden to report in order to preserve morale in wartime. The ship lies approximately half way along the Ardrossan-Brodick Ferry Route and is controlled under the Protection of Military Remains Act. Memorials are sited at both Ardrossan Front and at Brodick Pier in the Terminal Building. A portion from the sale of this mug is donated to HMS Dasher (1943) Association.
